However, in order to be able to do this successfully, you need to be able analyze successful scripts or films. Unfortunately, while pretty much everyone can recognize and enjoy good work, breaking the elements down to understand why they are so good is a skill that most people don’t possess.
So how do you learn how to analyze scripts? It takes time and effort, but the assignments below will help you to focus in on one of the key elements of a good script ‘ your protagonist, the main character in your film.
I analyze dozens of scripts each year for clients, and one of the most common flaws I encounter is a weak or uninteresting protagonist. There are lots of different elements that go into creating a compelling protagonist, but two of the most important are motivation, and a character flaw. It therefore makes sense to see how good writers go about creating compelling protagonists.
Assignment One: What’s My Motivation?
This is simple to do. Choose the protagonist from three of your favorite films ‘ ideally, films or characters that are similar to the story you are writing. Think about the protagonist ‘ what is their motivation? What is it that drives them on, that makes them run through a brick wall, face down the most powerful enemy to achieve their goal? It should be pretty clear to you why the protagonist does what they do.
Once you are clear what it is that drives them, consider how they project this motivation? One of the great skills of scriptwriting is to translate the characters’ feelings into action that the audience can see. So how do the good writers you are looking at show their characters’ motivation?
Assignment: What’s My Flaw?
Look again at your favorite film characters ‘ are they perfect, or do they have flaws, limitations? All great characters have flaws ‘ what are they? What is their weakness, the thing they are trying to hide or cover up, the element of their character they need to change in order to be successful?
You will find that almost all movie heroes have a flaw (even Superman is vulnerable to Kryptonite, can’t see through lead, and is weakened by his love for Lois Lane). Unless they are superheroes, it is their growth and development, their ability to overcome this flaw and change ‘ to become a better person ‘ that engages the audience and helps them to achieve their goal. How is that achieved in the script or film you are looking at?
Now think about your characters. Is their motivation as strong and clear as the heroes in the movies you watched? And what about their flaws? Are they interesting flaws, issues that they have to address to achieve their goal in the film? These are two key elements of writing great characters, and improving them will dramatically improve your story.
We all enjoy love movies ‘ we wouldn’t be screenwriters if we didn’t ‘ but if you can learn to analyze the films you watch and incorporate that learning into the scripts you write, you will become a better screenwriter.
